B-roll footage helps enhance and enrich the news story being told. It includes additional footage, animations, graphic design, or photographs, all pertaining to the story at hand. They help take away from the original cut scenes and make for a seamless production. B-rolls assist with removing unwanted content, allowing the removal of additional things the editor or director does not want in the footage. This can be anything from visual to audible errors.

The term b-roll can also refer to various footage or content that is provided to a publication or news organization free of charge. This happens in hopes of complimentary publicity for their company, organization, or service.
