Commentary is the discussion or explanation of events or situations that contributes to the audience's understanding of what is happening as well as the writer's point of view. The most common type of commentary in journalism would be in sports, where a commentator will give a live play-by-play on the happenings of the sports event. Most commentaries outside of sports are considered to be the writer's personal opinions on whatever matter is being discussed. It provides several perspectives and gives the audience new ways of looking at the subject at hand.
