Sample work is used to establish an aspiring journalist's portfolio, showing pieces they have written and their writing capacities. When looking for new writers or reporters to join their ranks, most publications will require sample work in order to judge that applicant's writing style, ability, and skills. Most sample work is assembled together into a single portfolio that showcases the journalists work. They continuously add to their portfolio throughout their careers, either adding more sample work into it or substituting pieces for others.
