International Freedom of Information Exchange (Canada)

Originally established in 1992 as the International Freedom of Information Exchange and now formally named IFEX, this international, nonprofit network of 80 non-governmental organizations works at all levels of society to protect and extend the basic human right to freedom of speech without facing official intimidation, financial ruin from expansive civil slander and libel laws or other abuses. Headquartered in Canada, IFEX has gradually expanded its membership to include more regional and local organizations. The organization, which has shifted its operating focus to digital media, makes a special effort to reach a global audience by consistently translating its materials from English into French, Arabic and Spanish.

IFEX pushes hard for the democratization of news and opposes what it sees as a dangerous trend toward concentration of primary media sources into large commercial entities. IFEX is supported almost exclusively by annual dues from its members.
