International Press Institute (Austria)

The IPI was founded in 1950. This organization is deeply involved with the promotion and protection of the free press. Its charter is to work with other journalistic organizations to promote the free flow of information and to assure that the rights of free speech go unimpeded for newsrooms throughout the world. The membership includes editors, media executives and leading journalists from all parts of the worldwide media. The organization's "Press Freedom Fund" was implemented in order to provide funds to fight freedom of speech violations anywhere in the world. The fund is available for legal representation, for negotiations with government officials and to cover lobbying costs incurred when working with local embassies to help pressure freedom of press violators within certain governments to make improvements. As one of the foremost authorities on press freedom, the IPI releases intermittent information regarding relevant issues about freedom of the press using a variety of publications and newsletters.
